Strut the Streets to Support Black Women

I-HEART RADIO PRESENTS SISTA STRUT 2020

African American women have a 30% higher death rate from Breast Cancer than other women. They are more likely than white women to be diagnosed with breast cancer before age 40 and more likely to be diagnosed with larger tumors. Awareness of these issues will help survival rates with earlier diagnoses.

Last year while on a photoshoot at a hospital I met a women whose job was to help people figure out how to avoid bankruptcy when they got cancer. I was horrified that this was reality for anyone in America.

That’s why I was so excited when Rebecca Arbour with iHeartRadio reached out about Sista Strut. The mission of Sista Strut is to help raise money, awareness, and community support for Breast Cancer, specifically for African American women.

Often when dealing with cancer, patients are unable to work and face financial challenges like being unable to buy food, pay for gas, or get transportation. Even if they can continue working the costs of cancer treatments is crippling. And with the gender pay gap more adversely affecting black women, a diagnosis can be catastrophic.

Sista Strut will support local non-profits Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation and the Breast Center at Providence. These organizations help by providing basic needs so that patients can focus on their care and know that food will be on the table and they can get to the treatments they need.

This year’s walk got a “remix” due to COVID-19 and we are invited to #StrutTheStreets2020. Their goal is to cover the neighborhoods of Mobile, AL with friends and neighbors walking together.

Meet your team on Saturday July 25th in a place of your choosing and WALK!
